Pedagogical Approaches to Supporting First-generation College Students in Academic Settings
Sunday, April 2, 2023 from 9:00am- 12:00pm
Location: TBD

Presenters: Marisa Milanese, Master Lecturer, Boston University, Christina Michaud, Master Lecturer; Associate Director of ELL Writing, Boston University, Mathew Hurwitz, Associate Teaching Professor, First Year Writing Program, Director, River Hawk Scholars Academy, UMass Lowell, Shaima Ragab, Director of Faculty Success, UMass Lowell,

First-generation students represent one third of all college-going students. Given the amount of time students spend in the classroom and the representation of first-generation students, it is important for colleges and universities to understand pedagogical approaches to support first-generation students in academic settings. A handshake to intentional support from academic and student affairs relies on the understanding of the impact of curriculum, instructional practices, and the incorporation of students’ identities in the classroom. Tailored approaches to support first-generation students in academic spaces requires an intentional and intersectional lens to address instructional practices and environmental factors that can impede student success. The presenters will offer examples from grassroots efforts to embedded teaching and learning centers.

Creating Sustainable Institutional Change to Advance First-generation Student Success *This pre-conference workshop is only available to First-gen Forward and First Scholars institutions
