An update from the NASPA Annual Conference Leadership Team regarding Unite Here
We are aware that Unite Here – the union representing the staff at the JW Marriott LA Live (NASPA’s primary conference hotel), and many other hotels in the Los Angeles area – has been reaching out to NASPA members regarding the 2019 NASPA Annual Conference. The purpose of these calls is to make NASPA members aware that the Unite Here will be entering into contract negotiations in preparation for their November 30, 2018 contract expiration. This is a commonly used union tactic to garner support for their efforts. You are under no obligation to take these calls or respond to their messages.
The JW Marriott LA Live does not currently have an active labor dispute with their employees and the hotel General Manager has confirmed that they intend to enter into preliminary good faith negotiations with Unite Here beginning in September. There is no reason to believe that the two sides will not amicably reach an agreement as the JW Marriott LA Live has a long record of recognizing, valuing, and paying their employees fairly, equitably, and above the City of Los Angeles minimum wage. However, NASPA does have protections written into in our contracts in the event of labor disputes and will continue to be in touch with the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the management of the JW Marriott LA Live to monitor the situation.
