2020 NASPA Annual Conference

Austin Fun for the Family

Austin is a great destination to explore with your children. While visiting Austin for the Annual Conference planning meeting in July, I brought my daughter along and we had a blast seeing all the sights and taking part in all that the city has to offer.

If you are the outdoorsy type or just looking for ways to soak up that Texas sun while in town, Barton Springs is a great family-friendly spot! Along Barton Creek, you will find tons of families swimming in the natural springs, meet all of the dogs you could dream of petting and be able to take in the views of the skyline from some shaded areas along the path. A couple of spots along Barton Springs have water activities for rent, such as kayaks and canoes! You can row on the Colorado River and experience Austin from an entirely different lens on the water!

South Congress Street is full of fun things for kids to see and experience. Whether trying on boots at Allens Boots, dressing up at Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds or grabbing ice cream at Amy’s, your children will be sure to be entertained. The street is also lined with several bookstores, trading companies, restaurants, and artwork. Finish off a stroll down the street by grabbing one of Torchy’s Tacos! Just make sure you read the signs and park where permitted!

By far, one of my daughter’s favorite experiences of the visit was finding all of the famous murals around the city and taking pictures with them! Taking your children on a mural scavenger hunt can be loads of fun. You can let your children pick out their favorite to visit from a list of famous Austin murals! From there, it was so exciting to see my daughter light up as she found the mural from the pictures we saw and to run out and snap a pic with them!

And of course, with all of these fun activities, some of the most fun you can have with children is eating your way through Austin! Whether you fancy BBQ, Tex Mex, food trucks or something a little bit more elegant, Austin has so many options. Travel up north to The Domain for tons of outdoor dining that can accommodate large groups and has plenty of selection or stop at any of the great BBQ spots downtown. If you have time and can rent a car, venturing out to Driftwood to visit well-known The Salt Lick could be a fun adventure too! There are plenty of family friend options!
