2023 NASPA Annual Conference

#NASPA23 Welcome from Dan Maxwell, 2023 Conference Chair

Happy New Year.

As we welcome back staff and students to another semester or quarter, many of us set aspirational goals or declare a few resolutions for the new year both in our personal and professional lives. On a personal note, I continue to focus on my mental and physical health along with positively contributing to my relationships with family and friends. In respect to my professional life, I am focused on ways in which I can lift the good work of my colleagues, remain authentically myself as a leader and team member, do good work, and contribute to the investment of professional growth for myself and others.

In a few short months, the 2023 NASPA Annual Conference will be upon us, and I am excited to welcome you to Boston and engage with those who will participate virtually. I am so proud of the good work of the 2023 Conference Leadership Committee and their continuing efforts as we thoughtfully bring together thousands of student affairs professionals from around the world to invest in our profession and in one another. I look forward to sharing our collective good work through Keynote and Featured Speakers, Pre-conference Workshops and Educational Sessions, Scholarly Papers and Extended Learning Sessions, and to provide space for colleagues – new and old – to connect, engage, and celebrate. The Annual Conference, for me, is a professional homecoming where we can explore the newness of our profession, learn from one another, and rekindle the “why” in what we do every day as student affairs professionals.

This year’s conference will provide opportunities for colleagues to reconvene in a community space that will feel familiar to those who have attended past Annual Conferences, and may feel like a new experience to colleagues who have not yet attended a NASPA event of this size. We are seeing engagement increase in different avenues: I have heard that at many regional events, we are also seeing record numbers of first-time attendees, and the Conference Leadership Committee received record high proposals for 2023. In all our efforts selecting programs and speakers, and creating opportunities to connect and experience Boston, we have remained centered on the 2023 NASPA Annual Conference focus areas: Centering Student Affairs in an Institutional Context, Infusing Scholarship into Practice, and Embracing the Future of the Profession.

For those who will join us in the place-based event, Boston is an exciting city and place to convene this year’s conference. The city has its own rich and complicated history that contributes to the important and challenging conversations we hope to have when we gather April 1-5, 2023. Between now and when you arrive in Boston, or when you join us virtually, the Conference Leadership Committee members will be sharing their insights on upcoming programs, services, and activities through conference blogs on the NASPA Annual Conference website and in NASPA communications. There will be many opportunities to invest in your professional growth, celebrate with colleagues, and unapologetically have some fun. Many thoughtful and caring colleagues have already been a part of creating a place and space where we matter, where our learning and growth are a priority, and where opportunities are possible.

Please take the time to explore the conference agenda that is now live on the conference website. I hope you can take full advantage of what we have to offer during the 2023 NASPA Annual Conference.
